What Is a Double Crank Gap Press?

A double crank gap press is a mechanical C-frame (gap frame) press with two cranks driving the slide through two connections, one near each end. The two connections keep a long slide level when the load is off center, so one press can run a wide progressive die or several dies side by side. The frame is open at the front and both sides, which makes it easy to set dies with a forklift and feed coil stock right to left through the press. Builders also call them two point gap frame presses, C-frame double crank presses or open type double crank presses.

A gap frame opens slightly under load (angular deflection), while a straight side frame stretches straight up and down. For tight-tolerance progressive dies or loads above about 300 tons, look at straight side double crank presses. For single dies and lighter work, OBI presses cost less and take less floor space. Choosing a Used Double Crank Gap Press

  • Tonnage and load position. A mechanical press delivers its rated tonnage near the bottom of the stroke. Two connections spread an off-center load, but size the press for the whole die with a margin for blanking.
  • Bed size. Measure the die and the feed line right to left. Wide beds are the reason to buy a two point gap press, so check the bolster size, T-slots and any bolster openings for scrap.
  • Stroke and shut height. The die has to close within the shut height with the slide adjustment available, and the stroke has to clear the part and the feed.
  • Speed and drive. The larger geared presses run slower with more energy per stroke for forming; the smaller flywheel presses run faster for blanking and progressive work. Variable speed helps with setup and new dies.
  • Options. Air counterbalances, hydraulic overload protection, motorized slide adjustment and updated press controls with light curtains or two-hand controls.

Double Crank Gap Press FAQ

What is the difference between a double crank gap press and a straight side double crank press?

Both have two connections to the slide. A double crank gap press has a C-frame that is open on the front and sides, costs less and fits most work up to about 275 tons. A straight side double crank press has columns on both sides, deflects less under load and is built for higher tonnage and tighter tolerances.

Is a double crank gap press the same as an OBI press?

No. An OBI (open back inclinable) press has one crank and a frame that tilts back. A double crank gap press has two cranks and a wider bed, and it usually stands upright.

Which models are double crank gap presses?

Common two point gap frame models include the Komatsu OBW series, Aida NC2, Stamtec G2, Seyi SN2 and Sutherland FTP. The "2" in NC2, G2 and SN2 marks the two point version of each builder's gap frame press.

How are your used presses sold?

Every double crank gap press can be sold as-is, as-is under power or reconditioned from one of our warehouses, so we can match your lead time and budget. We also buy or trade surplus presses.

Can I see a press run before I buy?
