H Frame Hydraulic Presses

An H-frame hydraulic press uses two upright columns joined by top and bottom crossmembers, so the frame forms an "H". It's the most common shop press design: rigid, simple to service and easy to fit with custom tooling. Alma Machinery stocks used H frame presses from compact shop presses to industrial machines, each one inspected before sale.

What Is an H-Frame Hydraulic Press?

An H-frame press, also called an H frame shop press, has two vertical columns tied together at the top and bottom, with the hydraulic cylinder mounted in the top crossmember. The open front and back let you load long or awkward parts, and many H-frame presses have an adjustable bed or a work head that moves side to side. Because the frame is closed on both sides, it stays very rigid for its size.

H-Frame vs. C-Frame vs. 4-Post Hydraulic Presses

  • H-frame presses: two columns, open front and back, very rigid. Best for straightening, bending, pressing bearings, bushings and pins, assembly and general shop work.
  • C-frame hydraulic presses: open on three sides for easy loading. Best for smaller parts, assembly lines and automation.
  • 4-post hydraulic presses: four columns guide the slide for an even, parallel stroke across a large bed. Best for forming, molding, trimming and die work.

What to Check When Buying a Used H-Frame Press

  • Cylinder and seals: no oil leaks, no scoring on the ram.
  • Frame and welds: no cracks at the corners where the columns meet the crossmembers.
  • Pump, motor and valves: runs quietly, builds and holds pressure, relief valve set correctly.
  • Controls and safety: working two-hand controls or pendant, guarding in place, gauge reads accurately.
  • Size for your parts: tonnage with headroom, plus enough daylight, stroke and width between columns for your largest part.

Every used press Alma Machinery sells is inspected before sale, and most are sold fully reconditioned.

H-Frame Press FAQ

What is an H-frame press used for?

Straightening shafts and weldments, pressing bearings, bushings and pins in or out, bending and forming, assembly, and general maintenance and repair work.

What size H-frame press do I need?

Choose a tonnage comfortably above the most force your job requires, then confirm the daylight (open height), stroke and width between the columns fit your largest part. Send us your part size and required force and we'll match you with the right press.
