Used Non-Motorized Coil Reels in Stock

A non-motorized coil reel (also called a standard reel, pull-off reel, stock reel or manual decoiler) has no drive motor. The coil turns freely on its mandrel, and the feeder or straightener pulls the strip off while a drag brake keeps the coil from spinning too far. Every reel on this page is owned and warehoused by us in Jackson, Michigan or Columbia, Tennessee, so you can check it before you buy, ask for a video, or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson.

Stock typically runs from small 300 lb reels for narrow strip up to 10,000 lb uncoilers, in coil widths from about 4" to 30". Littell standard reels are the ones we see most, along with PA Industries, Dallas, Mecon, CHS, Jaco, Rapid-Air and Durant.

How a Pull-Off Reel Works

The coil sits on an expanding mandrel, usually tightened with a hand wheel or crank, between a backplate and coil keepers. As the press runs, the feeder pulls strip off the coil. An adjustable drag brake puts light tension on the mandrel, so the coil stops when the feeder stops instead of unwinding onto the floor. With no motor, drive or loop control, there is very little to wear out or wire up.

Types of Non-Motorized Reels

Reel typeBest for
Standard reelOne mandrel with a drag brake. The everyday reel for light coils and air or servo feeds.
Double-end reelTwo mandrels on a turntable. Load the next coil while one runs, then swing it around.
Automatic centering reelBackplates move together so every coil width lines up with the center of the line. Saves setup when you change widths often.
Portable reel / coil standSmall reels on a base that can be moved between presses with a forklift or pallet jack.

When a Non-Motorized Reel Makes Sense

  • Light coils and thin material. The feeder can pull the coil without slipping or stretching the strip.
  • Slower feed rates and short or intermittent runs.
  • Air feeders and smaller servo feeds rated to pull the coil.
  • Simple setup. No power, wiring or loop control to install, and the lowest cost per pound of capacity.

Step up to a motorized reel when coils get heavy, material gets thick, the feed rate climbs, or the feeder starts slipping or losing feed accuracy because it's pulling too much weight.

What to Check

  • Capacity, width, O.D. and I.D. Match your heaviest and widest coil. Our coil reels page explains how to estimate coil weight.
  • Drag brake. Make sure it's adjustable and holds the coil without grabbing.
  • Height. The floor-to-mandrel height should line up with your feeder's pass line.
  • Keepers and backplates. They keep wide or loose coils from telescoping.

Non-Motorized Coil Reel FAQ

What is a non-motorized coil reel?

A coil reel without a drive motor. The feeder or straightener pulls the strip off, and a drag brake keeps the coil from overrunning.

What is a drag brake on a coil reel?

An adjustable brake on the reel's mandrel that adds light tension, so the coil stops turning when the feeder stops instead of free-wheeling and spilling strip.

Can a servo feed pull from a non-motorized reel?

Yes, if the feeder is rated to pull the coil's weight at your feed rate. For heavier coils or faster lines, a motorized reel with loop control gives a more accurate feed.

Is a manual decoiler the same as a non-motorized reel?

Yes. Manual decoiler, standard reel, stock reel and pull-off reel all describe a reel without a drive motor.

Can I see a reel before I buy?

Ask for a video, or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson at our Jackson, Michigan or Columbia, Tennessee warehouse.

Inventory changes every week, and some reels arrive before they are listed. If you don't see the reel you need, contact us with your coil weight, width, O.D. and I.D.
