Flywheel Type OBI Presses

High Speed Production Capability: In a non geared flywheel press, the clutch directly engages the main flywheel to the crankshaft without any intermediate gear reduction. This direct drive design provides a rapid, instantaneous release of kinetic energy precisely at the bottom of the stroke. Perfect for thin metals and light gauge materials, these machines achieve significantly higher strokes per minute (SPM) than geared setups, making them the industry standard for high volume blanking, piercing, and shallow forming operations.

The Mechanics and Ideal Applications of Flywheel Stamping Presses

Understanding the Direct Drive Flywheel System

The core mechanical distinction of a flywheel press, often referred to as a non geared press, lies in its direct power transmission. The electric motor drives belts that spin a massive, heavy flywheel. When the operator initiates a cycle, the clutch mechanism instantly locks the freely spinning flywheel directly to the press crankshaft. Because there is no gear reduction involved, the ram cycles at the full engineered speed of the flywheel rotation.

This design creates a specific kinetic energy profile: maximum force is delivered in a sharp, rapid spike at the very bottom dead center (BDC) of the stroke. The energy dissipates almost immediately upon impact, which dictates the types of tooling and materials suited for these machines.

Key Manufacturing Applications

Because flywheel presses rely on speed and sharp impact rather than sustained pressure, they excel in specific fabrication niches:

  • High Volume Blanking: Rapidly stamping out flat profiles from sheet metal or coil stock.
  • Piercing and Perforating: Punching clean holes through thin gauge materials without tearing or burring.
  • Progressive Die Operations: Ideal for lightweight, multi-station tooling that requires fast, snappy cycles to maintain production quotas.
  • Electrical Components: Manufacturing small, intricate terminal contacts, washers, and shims where material thickness is minimal.

Tooling & Die Protection Warning: It is critical to understand that a flywheel press should never be used for deep drawing or heavy extrusion. Because the energy curve drops sharply higher up in the stroke, attempting a deep draw on a direct drive press will likely stall the motor, drastically overheat the clutch, or physically fracture the press frame. For those applications, a back geared press is required.

Modernizing Legacy Single Point Flywheel Presses

Many legacy C-frame and single point presses originally utilized mechanical pin clutches or rolling key clutches. When sourcing used gap frame machinery, upgrading these older systems to modern, pneumatically actuated air clutch and brake combinations is highly recommended. Not only does an air clutch allow the ram to be stopped instantaneously at any point in the stroke, ensuring strict OSHA compliance, but it also provides a smoother engagement that extends the lifespan of the press crankshaft and main bearings.
