Used Presses for Sale
We keep close to 1,000 used presses in stock, from bench-top presses under 1 ton to transfer press lines over 4,000 tons. That includes about 470 hydraulic presses, about 220 OBI presses, about 150 straight side presses and dozens of high speed presses. Most presses are in our warehouses in Michigan and Tennessee, so you can ask for a video or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson before you buy. We've been buying, reconditioning and selling used presses since 1948, and we sell new Komatsu presses too.
Types of Used Presses in Stock
| Press type | Best for | Tonnage in stock |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic presses | Forming, deep drawing, molding, trimming and assembly. Full force anywhere in the stroke, with adjustable stroke and pressure. | Under 1 to 1,400 tons |
| OBI presses | Gap frame (C-frame) stamping presses for blanking, piercing and forming, open on three sides for easy die access. | 22 to 275 tons |
| Straight side presses | Closed-frame presses for progressive and transfer dies, heavy blanking and long beds. | 40 to 4,500 tons |
| High speed presses | Small parts, terminals and laminations at hundreds of strokes per minute. | 22 to 440 tons |
| Gap frame double crank presses | Wider progressive dies on an open C-frame, with two connections to keep the slide level. | 40 to 275 tons |
| Air / pneumatic presses | Light assembly, staking, marking and punching; air-over-oil models for more force. | Under 1 to about 100 tons |
Mechanical vs. Hydraulic Presses
The first choice is usually the drive. A mechanical press, often called a stamping press or punch press, stores energy in a flywheel and delivers it through a crank, so it's fast and repeatable. A hydraulic press uses a cylinder, so it can deliver full force at any point in the stroke and hold it there.
| Mechanical (stamping) press | Hydraulic press | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive | Motor and flywheel turn a crankshaft or eccentric that drives the slide | Hydraulic pump and cylinder push the slide (ram) |
| Force | Full rated tonnage near the bottom of the stroke | Full rated tonnage anywhere in the stroke |
| Stroke | Fixed on most presses (adjustable on some) | Fully adjustable length, speed and dwell |
| Speed | Fast: about 20 to several hundred strokes per minute, more on high speed presses | Slower cycles, set by pump size |
| Best for | High-volume blanking, piercing, progressive and transfer dies | Deep drawing, forming, molding, straightening, assembly and short runs |
| Overload | Needs hydraulic overload protection to guard the press and die | Relief valve limits force, so it can't be overloaded past its setting |
How to Choose a Used Press
- Tonnage. Add up the force for every operation in the die, then add a safety margin of about 20% to 30%. On a mechanical press, check that the rated tonnage is available where your die does its work in the stroke.
- Frame. A gap frame (C-frame) is open on three sides for easy loading; a straight side or 4-post frame deflects less under heavy or off-center loads.
- Bed and bolster size. Right-to-left and front-to-back room for the die, plus clamping space.
- Stroke, shut height and daylight. Enough stroke for part lift and forming depth, and enough shut height (or daylight on a hydraulic press) to fit the die.
- Speed. Strokes per minute that suit the part, the material and your feed line.
- Controls and safety. Updated clutch/brake controls, light curtains or two-hand controls, and PLC controls on hydraulic presses.
- Power and installation. Voltage, floor space, and whether a larger press needs a pit or a reinforced foundation.
Reconditioned or Fast Lead Time
About 95% of our inventory can be sold reconditioned. A 1/3 deposit starts the reconditioning process, and standard lead time is 1 to 5 weeks. Presses marked Fast Lead Time are already reconditioned or set up under power, so they can ship sooner. Use our quick filters to find hydraulic presses with quick lead times and mechanical presses with quick lead times.
Used Press Manufacturers
The builders we carry most are Minster, Wabash, Greenerd, Komatsu, Neff, Bliss, Multipress, PHI, Niagara, Aida and Federal, plus custom-built presses.
Used Press FAQ
What is the difference between a mechanical and a hydraulic press?
A mechanical press uses a flywheel and crank, so it runs fast and delivers full tonnage near the bottom of the stroke. A hydraulic press uses a cylinder, so it's slower but delivers full tonnage anywhere in the stroke, with adjustable stroke and pressure.
What is a stamping press?
A press, usually mechanical, that cuts and forms sheet metal with a die. Punch press, power press and stamping press often mean the same thing.
What size press do I need?
For blanking and piercing, a common estimate is: cut length (in.) × material thickness (in.) × shear strength of the material (psi) ÷ 2,000 = tons. Add every station in the die, then about 20% to 30% for a safety margin. Forming and drawing need their own calculations; your salesperson can help.
Can I see a press run before I buy?
Ask for a video, or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson at our Michigan or Tennessee warehouses.
How long does reconditioning take?
Standard lead time is 1 to 5 weeks after a 1/3 deposit. Presses marked Fast Lead Time can ship sooner.
Do you sell new presses?
Yes. We sell new Komatsu presses, including servo presses, alongside our used inventory.
Do you buy used presses?
Yes. We buy single presses, complete press lines and full plants. See sell your machinery or send us photos and the nameplate.
Inventory changes every week, and some presses arrive before they are listed. If you don't see the press you need, contact us with your tonnage, bed size, stroke and shut height (or daylight).
