Used Flywheel OBI Punch Presses in Stock

A flywheel OBI press (also called a non-geared, direct drive or flywheel type punch press) is a C-frame mechanical stamping press where the clutch connects the flywheel straight to the crankshaft, with no gear reduction in between. That keeps the press fast and simple, which is why it's the classic punch press for blanking, piercing and progressive die work in thinner material. Every press on this page is owned and warehoused by us in Jackson, Michigan or Columbia, Tennessee, so you can ask for a video or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson before you buy.

We keep more than 100 flywheel OBI presses in stock, from about 22 to 220 tons, with most between 45 and 75 tons and strokes of 4" or less. Minster is the builder we see most, followed by Bliss, Komatsu, Federal, Rousselle and South Bend Johnson. We also sell new Komatsu presses.

What Flywheel Punch Presses Do Best

JobWhy a flywheel press fits
Blanking and piercingThe work happens in the last fraction of an inch of the stroke, right where a flywheel press delivers its rated tonnage.
Progressive diesShort strokes and high SPM turn out finished parts from coil stock quickly.
Shallow forming and bendingFine in thinner material; for deep forming, drawing or thick stock, a back geared OBI press has more energy.
Very high volumeFor hundreds of strokes per minute, look at our dynamically balanced high speed presses.

Speed, Energy and the Flywheel

A flywheel press does its work with energy stored in the spinning flywheel, and that energy drops with the square of the flywheel's speed: at half speed it stores only about a quarter of the energy. If you plan to run a variable speed press slowly, or to blank thicker material, check that the press has enough energy at the speed you'll actually run, not just enough tonnage. A press that stalls or slows hard at the bottom of the stroke is short on energy.

Features to Look For

  • Air friction clutch and brake. Nearly every press here has one; it allows single-stroke operation and modern safety controls.
  • Variable speed drive. Set the SPM for each die and material.
  • Air counterbalance. Carries the slide and upper die weight for smoother running.
  • Hydraulic overload. Protects the press and die on a double hit.
  • Inclinable frame. Some older presses still tilt back so parts slide out by gravity.
  • Guarding and controls. Light curtains, two-hand controls and updated PLC clutch/brake controls.

How to Choose a Flywheel OBI Press

  • Tonnage and rating point. Flywheel presses are rated close to the bottom of the stroke; check that it covers where your die does its work.
  • Energy at your speed. Especially for blanking thick material or running slowly.
  • Stroke, shut height and slide adjustment. Must fit the die and clear the part.
  • Bed size. Right-to-left for progressive dies, front-to-back for feeding and die setting.
  • Feed line. Pair it with a servo feeder or air feeder and a coil reel.

Flywheel OBI Press FAQ

What is a flywheel press?

A mechanical press whose clutch connects the flywheel directly to the crankshaft, with no gears. It runs fast and is best for blanking, piercing and progressive work in thinner material.

Is a punch press the same as a stamping press?

Mostly, yes. "Punch press" usually means a mechanical stamping press used for punching, blanking and piercing, and flywheel OBI presses are the most common type.

What is a non-geared press?

Another name for a flywheel (direct drive) press. A geared or back geared press adds a gear reduction for more torque at lower speeds.

How fast does a flywheel OBI press run?

Most run from about 60 to a few hundred strokes per minute, and some reach far higher. Each listing shows its speed, and many have variable speed drives.

Can I see a press run before I buy?

Ask for a video, or schedule an in-person inspection with your salesperson at our Jackson, Michigan or Columbia, Tennessee warehouse.

Do you buy used punch presses?

Yes. We buy single presses, complete press lines and full plants. See sell your machinery or send us photos and the nameplate.
