Which Type of Stamping Press Do You Need?
| Press type | Tonnage in stock | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| OBI (open back inclinable) | 22 to 275 ton, mostly 40 to 165 | Blanking, piercing and forming smaller parts. Open on three sides for easy die access, and the frame tilts back so parts and slugs fall out the rear. |
| Double crank gap frame | 40 to 275 ton | Longer dies or several dies side by side. Two connections spread the load across a wide bed while keeping gap-frame access. |
| Straight side | 40 to 4,500 ton, mostly 100 to 440 | Progressive and transfer dies, heavy or off-center loads and close tolerances. Columns on both sides keep frame deflection low. |
| High-speed | 22 to 880 ton, mostly 35 to 330 | High-volume progressive work such as motor laminations, terminals and connectors at hundreds of strokes per minute. |
| Knuckle joint | See current stock | Coining, embossing, sizing and cold forming. A knuckle linkage slows the slide near the bottom of the stroke and multiplies force there. |
| Fin type | See current stock | High-speed production of heat exchanger fins for HVAC and radiator coils, usually fed from a coil line with a fin die. |
What to Check on a Used Stamping Press
- Tonnage and where it is rated. A mechanical press reaches full tonnage only near the bottom of the stroke, so check the rating point against where your die does its work.
- Bed area, shut height and stroke. Your dies have to fit the bed and bolster, and the shut height and stroke have to suit the die height and part depth.
- Speed. Strokes per minute, and whether the press has a variable-speed drive.
- Clutch and brake. Air friction clutch and brake condition and stopping time. We do not sell full-revolution clutch presses.
- Frame and slide. Gib clearance, connection and crankshaft bearing wear, counterbalance and lubrication.
- Controls and guarding. Press control, light curtains or two-hand controls, and the electrical supply (voltage) the press needs.
- Options. Die cushion, hydraulic overload protection, slide adjustment and whether a coil feed line is available with it.
Reconditioned In-House
Every press is inspected when it comes in, and most can be sold as-is or fully reconditioned in our own shop. Reconditioning is quoted per machine. A one-third deposit starts the work, and standard lead time is 1 to 5 weeks. We can also help coordinate rigging and freight to your plant.
Stamping Press FAQ
What is a stamping press?
A stamping press is a mechanical press: an electric motor spins a flywheel, and a clutch transfers that stored energy through a crankshaft or eccentric to drive the slide down through a fixed stroke. The die mounted between the slide and the bed cuts or forms sheet metal or coil into parts. Stamping presses are rated by tonnage, the force they can apply near the bottom of the stroke.
What is the difference between a mechanical and a hydraulic press?
A mechanical press runs faster, with a fixed stroke and full tonnage near the bottom of the stroke, which suits high-volume blanking, piercing and progressive die work. A hydraulic press delivers full tonnage anywhere in the stroke and lets you adjust stroke length and dwell, which suits deep drawing, molding, straightening and assembly, but it cycles more slowly.
How much tonnage do I need?
For blanking and piercing, multiply the length of the cut (in inches) by the material thickness (in inches) by the material's shear strength (in tons per square inch). Mild steel is about 25 tons per square inch. Then add a 20 to 30% safety margin, and check that the press is rated for that tonnage at the point in the stroke where your die does its work.
Do you sell servo presses?
Yes. We sell new Komatsu servo presses with short lead times as many are in stock ready to ship. A servo press replaces the flywheel and clutch with a servo motor, so slide speed and motion can be programmed for each job.
Can I see a press run before I buy?
Yes. Visit our Jackson, Michigan or Columbia, Tennessee warehouse to inspect any press in person, or ask for a video. Call Michigan at (734) 971-8860 or Tennessee at (615) 369-7788.
